Community
Research is inherently collaborative and built on trust—trust in our colleagues, in our shared goals, and in the broader mission of science. In the Zamora Lab, we recognize that we are part of multiple communities: our lab, our department, and society at large, which entrusts us to work with integrity and purpose. We take that responsibility seriously, especially as our research focuses on chronic airway diseases that disproportionately affect underrepresented populations. We are committed to conducting our work with care, respect, and a sense of shared accountability to those we aim to serve.

Open communication
Clear, respectful communication is essential to a thriving research environment. In the Zamora Lab, we prioritize open dialogue between mentors and trainees, where ideas, questions, and concerns are welcomed and valued. Everyone should feel empowered to speak up and know that their voice matters. As a mentor, I am committed to creating consistent opportunities for honest conversation in a supportive, inclusive, and judgment-free space. Open communication builds trust—and trust builds great science.

Honesty
Honesty is the foundation of scientific integrity. Our work builds on the discoveries of others and contributes to the future of biomedical knowledge, so it is essential that we conduct our research with transparency and accountability. We condemn scientific misconduct in all forms and actively promote training in "Responsible Conduct of Research". Mistakes happen—they are a natural and expected part of the learning process. What matters is how we respond: by being honest, taking responsibility, and using every challenge as an opportunity to grow.

Academic development
In the Zamora Lab, we believe that academic growth is a shared responsibility. Every lab member is expected to support the success of their peers by engaging in lab meetings, attending seminars, and contributing to a collaborative learning environment. As a mentor, I am committed to making each trainee’s academic development a priority. This includes working together to create Individual Development Plans (IDPs), offering opportunities to strengthen both technical and transferable skills, and fostering connections through networking and outreach. At the same time, trainees are expected to take ownership of their growth by being proactive, seeking feedback, and clearly communicating their needs and goals. Success in science is a team effort, and we grow stronger together.

Work-life balance
Academic science has long perpetuated a harmful culture that equates long hours with dedication—often at the expense of mental health. This mindset disproportionately excludes individuals from historically underrepresented backgrounds, many of whom face additional responsibilities. I am committed to leading with empathy and building a culture that prioritizes learning over productivity. We normalize self-care, encourage time off, and value the pursuits that bring fulfillment beyond the lab. Flexibility and compassion are at the heart of our approach, and we recognize that success in science should never require sacrificing one’s well-being or personal life. Whether it’s taking a break, starting a family, or simply setting healthy boundaries, everyone deserves a supportive environment where they can thrive—both professionally and personally.
